Sunisa Manning will discuss her recent novel A Good True Thai (Epigram, 2020), which tells the story of three young people who come of age in Thailand in the 1970s, a time of turbulent change and radical politics.

Her presentation will provide background to the events she covers in her novel, how she researched the period, and how art can contribute to understanding political uncertainties.

Join us as we celebrate Thirii Myo Kyaw Myint’s lyric memoir, Names for Light: A Family History, with Thirii and author Sunisa Manning (A Good True Thai). Discussing memory, family, and legacies of postcolonial violence in Southeast Asia, our panel will illuminate connections between their work and craft.

THIRII MYO KYAW MYINT is the author of The End of Peril, the End of Enmity, the End of Strife, a Haven. She has a BA from Brown University, an MFA from the University of Notre Dame, and a PhD from the University of Denver. She teaches at Amherst College.

SUNISA MANNING was born and raised in Bangkok by Thai and American parents. She has a BA in English Literature from Brown University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her first novel, A Good True Thai, was a finalist for the Epigram Books Fiction Prize for Southeast Asian writers. It was published in Southeast Asia in September 2020. It went into a second printing in February 2021.

About this event

Join the Brown Women's Network for a virtual fireside chat between writer and artist Mary-Kim Arnold '93 MFA'98 and author Sunisa Manning '07. They will discuss Manning's debut novel, A Good True Thai, which is set in Thailand during the ‘70s student movement. The book tells the story of three young people whose paths converge while at university, where they are swept up by political activism and the thrill of first love.
